Another introduction.. |
 |
|
*sigh* yes, it's yet another noob.
Hi all,
Hopefully my search for a decent experimental music community has ended. There is a forum on my MP3 host's site, but they seem to be too stuck up on trance/pop.
I'm a musician, or at least I try to be. Main equipement consists of only a few sequencers, a couple VSTs, several guitar pedals, two guitars and an old MIDI board. The problem is that I don't play them the way they're intended. I just sit on my own twisting knobs on the pedals while feeding some sounds through countless other filters, scratch at the guitar with files and rough-edges of quarters. Record odd sounds of pots, pans, pieces of metal, wood and plastic. Program loops and run it through numerous delays and warpers. When the basics are done, I splice-up, cut-up, rearange and mangle all these samples in track editing software. To most people, it's not easy-listening. Main influences would be: Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Mum, M83, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Kid A/Amnesiac style Radiohead.
Nice to meet yo uall! Over the next few days, I'll catch up on as many recent topics as I can.

Hi Etienne.
I've been soaking up your mp3's. Kept me hooked even with my lethargic 56k connection. Ambient but very engaging. Really like the way you work to gradually evolve the sound and introduce subtle yet distinct changes to keep things interesting. Haven't listened to everything but some of these tracks are excellent.
BTW I think I would be very much at home with your set up and sonic techniques. I have a drawer in my studio full of all sorts of paraphernalia just so I don't have to use a guitar pick. Two of my favs are a broken metal tape measure and an inflated balloon.
Good to have you here. _________________ Que la musique sonne - Edgard Varese

One of my favs is a plain old BIC pen, though I suppose any pen would work.
I'm currently working on a shared sample bank project consisting almost entirely of guitar and pen noises. If anyones interested, I've got .wav files |

You keep an inflated baloon in a drawer? Isnt that illegal in some provinces? All the Department of Homeland Security saw was {DRAWER]-[STUDIO]-[PARAPHENALIA]-[BALOON] It's a good thing you didn't mention keeping a spoon in there.
Yes welcome! Do participate, these threads are always more wonderfully entertaining and engaging as the diversity of tributary minds evolves.

Yeah, but that elk, like mine, is set aside not for experimentation or manipulation or food or profit. No, our elk are set aside for pleasure.

Right, our furry friends are indispensable. Too bad they are walking around with those wall decorations on their heads. Hmm, they have been talking to Martha Stewart..?

Well, after all I do live in Eastern Oregon. And he brought a pair of lederhosen for me too! So if you'll excuse me, I'll go get those spoons... _________________ Que la musique sonne - Edgard Varese

I am detecting vibes that are affecting my root chakra in ways that intice waves of anxiety and terror to wash over me, in a manner than would probably not be too unfamilliar with the available elk.

It's a post lederhosen morning. Checked out the other side of the wishbone - your Near Worlds page which gave me an even better perspective on your music. Good to see things like Sonic Youth & Vivaldi in the same paragraph.
So are you planning on posting more tracks at InternetDJ? (fyi - your homepage link there is dead). Just wondering since you link there from your personal site, but not to your zebox tracks.
It seems most mp3 host sites focus on beat/trance/pop when it come to electronic music. I think it's just where the culture is at right now. Have you checked out ElectronicScene? Been there only a short time but it looks like a good site.
BTW I noticed you were interested in theremin - you can get a cheapo but big fun desktop version here. _________________ Que la musique sonne - Edgard Varese

Hey... that one works... hehe
trivia: I just helped a buddy out with putting together a Paia Theremin he has had in his closet for years. The Paia Theremein is actually not bad at all. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

My, so many kind replies! Thank you everyone!

Hi Mezmer, thanks for the nice comments. We seem to have that in common, surounding ourselves with any kind of noise-making contraption! I can imagine what interesting sounds a metal tape measurer on a guitar would do, but a balloon! That's incredibly original! I would even know how to begin playing with it.. o_O
As for my Near Worlds page, it's pretty out-dated. I'm terrible when it comes to updating my own site. I probably should remove the IDJ links there. I won't be updating the internetdj page as seriously as my zebox one (which will always be available through the wishbone) it's a hassle for people to have to register there to download (unless they know the secret, bwahahah). So I'l update both pages in paralelle, though the zebox will have more of the older songs). And yes I have checked out ES I have a free 1-song account there, and the people there are awesome too! Can't get an full acount as easily though, because of my creditcard lacking-ness. Oh well, maybe next year when my zebox account runs out.
Cheers! |

You can upload music here. Post a topic in Online Music and use the attachment feature. There are limitations on size to prevent abuse. If you bump into them, let me know and they can be increased. |

Hey, nice avatar - that ought to be popular around here!
Yeah, partially inflate it, squeeze it till you get a good bubble and draw that across the strings - gives you a pretty good 'sitar' like effect... until it pops! _________________ Que la musique sonne - Edgard Varese

---------------
thanks to the thread comments, I got a feeling I'm going to dig the sounds Etienne... (at work now but later...)
------------------
I tried an electric razor in close proximity to the strings, hoping the vibrations would give me an e-bow effect, it was an adjustable razor and could be set to really rattle but , nope, no e-bow substitute. Near the pickups was interesting for the moment, especially through long reverb, never did come with anything remarkable enough to post though.

You shoulda been here!

I tried the same thing and was also fairly disappointed although I used the effect on an older piece called Mechanical Beach.
You can also try screaming into the pickups. The recording picks up a far off ethereal voice. Your family and/or neighbors, as the case may be, get an entirely different effect. _________________ Que la musique sonne - Edgard Varese
