Calendar Event: August 14, 2008 - August 16, 2008

We proudly announce electro-music 2008, a three day conference/music festival to be held at the Renaissance Center in Kingsport Tennessee, August 14 - 16, 2008. The program will include lectures, demos, jam sessions, and concerts.

The scope of this festival is very broad, covering all aspects of electro-music, experimental electronic music, including circuit bending, computer music, electro-jazz, modular synthesis, musique concrete, improvisation, algorithmic composition, multi-media, visual art and much more. The focus will be on participant involvement, sharing, community development, audience education, and great music.

A three day pass is available for purchase online (click here) for only $50. Tickets for individual concerts/events will be available at the door.

If you would like to participate in electro-music 2008 by giving a musical or visual performance, seminar, workshop, or demonstration, please follow the instructions here. Note that in order to cover the expenses, all participants are required to purchase tickets for the event.

electro-music 2008 will build on the success of the previous electro-music events in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The participants at those events felt it was a ground-breaking and inspirational experience. After three successful years in Philadelphia, the festival moves to Kingsport Tennessee. We expect many of the artists who were at the earlier events to return this year, along with some interesting and talented newcomers. More information can be found at the event web site: http://event.electro-music.com/

Ok. It's really official. Everyone needs to spread the word. I'm starting to put announcements on all the music sites I participate in. Hopefully others in this forum will do the same.

We don't know what will be happening as far as synth DIY until people sign up, but you're welcome to organize something.

Here's just a partial list, and in time I will try and list more:

People will be shocked how affordable things are here. For example; MeadowView is a very, very nice hotel with a fine 18 hole golf course and tennis courts. The rates are about $100-$110 a night. They have valet parking, and a nice restaurant. It's about 2-3 miles from the venue.
http://www.hotel-rates.com/us/tennessee/kingsport/marriott-meadowview-resort.html

Here's the Jameson Inn. It also is about 2-3 miles away and costs about $77 a night:
http://www.haveanicestay.com/info/37716/

There are plenty more. MeadowView is the best and most luxurious.

From either of the two motels listed above, it would take you 10 minutes (maybe less) to get to the venue. You would encounter about 4 traffic lights. You would see about 30 or less cars on the road.

There is a great state park with camping less than 10 miles from the venue. \http://www.tn.gov/environment/parks/WarriorsPath/

Here's some more info about the area and there is a list of hotels:

From the same site:

Charlotte/Douglas Intl. Airport
Atlanta Hartsfield Intl. Airport
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Intl

These above international airports fly into our airport, Tri-Cities Regional Airport.

Really! But how would we recognize each other? My avatar is my dog, Ringo, and he hates riding in a car. A trip from Florida to Tennessee would horrify him.

Probably. There will certainly be jam sessions and you may feel left out without your ax.

Well, here's my new beard configuration. I shaved off the thick white wooley one that looked like cobwebs, in order to do some job interviews, and am now letting this grow back, hoping to get to a hip, beatnik look.

Definitely bring your ax. The jams are ongoing, including at least one all-acoustic jam in the basement last year. I have to find out what my son's plans are -- he might also have an option of doing audio volunteering at the the Philly Folk Festival that weekend, and we have friends and neighbors playing onstage there -- but I am leaning hard in the direction of EM2008, especially if Jeremy comes with me. I am working on a 45 minute set every night now.

Speaking of my son, Jeremy called the other night from Canada to tell me that he and his lab partners had surround-sound-mic'd-and-processed his autoharp (Christmas present) to sound like you were inside the harp listening to it playing. I've got a pretty solid invite to contribute some banjo to one of the final projects he and his partners are planning -- surround-environmental-acoustic-instrument-ambient -- so it looks like I'll be driving to Ontario one more time than originally thought, this time with a van full of acoustic strings. I'll post some samples when it's done.

Looks like I have until late May to figure out what I am doing w.r.t. EM2008. I think EM2008 will win -- it's a very interactive event! I would sure hate to miss it this year.

ANY mention of the word "surround" gets my attention Shocked

Hi folks.

So I am contemplating going to this event. And I have a set I can play.

Problem is my gear. I will fly in. I can't bring my rig down. So, I was wondering if there might be any way I could get the following gear required for my performance:

2 x G2 Keyb (Expanded)
1 x Waldorf XT
1 x stereo Compressor
1 x Mackie 1202 VLZ or similar

The rest I can bring as on-board luggage.

But, folks, so far the flights are expensive as hell for me, even from Seattle. I will look into this further.

wish I could go but airfares are extremely high to fly there.
If it was closer to a city with a larger airport I might be able to make it.

Oh well. Enjoy and shoot video.

It looks going to be too pricey for me, too Sad

Thanks for looking into arranging gear for me.

But hey, I can record another live performance for the event, like I did for new years. Is there a possibility for people to attend and/or perform via skype or other means Howard? Like a live video stream from each lecture hall? Alternatively I like the idea of the video like a few years back.
