Quote:
Market intelligence firms Semico and iSuppli believe 1GB of flash memory in the volume market presently costs about $45. Thus, the 2GB iPod Nano, which sells for $199, potentially contains around $90 worth of flash memory, while the $249 4GB version would require approximately $180 worth of flash memory, a Semico's analyst said.

Quote:
But already some Korean MP3 player makers are miffed by the release of the nano and accuse Apple of "cutting corners" by using Samsung flash chips. They say there is no way for them to declare a price war with Apple and instead will counter the iPod nano with "new concept products.”

Quote:
One previous iPod component maker now absent from the aforementioned list is Synaptics, whose shares slipped further on Thursday as analysts confirmed that Apple is no longer using the company's click-wheel solutions in new iPods such as the nano. Synaptics had previously been Apple's primary supplier of both laptop trackpads and iPod scroll-wheels until Apple decided to develop its own solutions in order to gain more control over its intellectual property.

This has the look of a BIG mistake. Shocked

..probably not. I guess they know something we don´t. One possiblity is that Apple is developing new laptops and new ipod related gear and this is kept under a lid for now. BTW: rumours say that is what they are doing right now.

I too agree. The trackpad on this powerbook is horrible! The trackpad is quite unpredictable sometimes. I don't have an ipod so I can't comment on that. But I feel if Apple had control over this part of the product and therefore the quality, this would improve sales again imo.

Embarassed Opps. I misread the post. I thought Synaptics was cutting the relationship. Yes, good move for Apple to move on. The track pad on the PowerBook is very bad. Last week I was using Jack's new hp laptop. What a pleasure. Its trackpad was just bad, a step up from very bad. Laughing

I like the IBM post-mouse thing. Personal preference is important in this area.

Anyhow,

No doubt working on products for several years out. They are pretty good about that.

Apple has been interested in portable computing devices. Remember the Newton? Embarassed

Yes, I remember. And I still have my old Newton somewhere. Very Happy

Anyhow, this topic is about component costs. This is what I've been saying all along. With small volumes, the Apple chips and computers business has not been competitive. I'm not talking about features and function - just market share numbers.

The iPod has hugh numbers. Component costs will continue to fall for Apple and the competitive position of the iPod will just get better and better.

Moving to the Intel platform for the computers will be a shot in the arm to the computer business for similar reasons.

If you did read the article I linked to, there is more relevant info there.
What Apple has done here is 1. negotiate great prices for the samsung chips.. and 2. choosing to introduce the iPod Nano at a time this kind of product with this set of features still does not quite make any sense economically. ...Pretty agressive.. and pretty bold..

Yes. This is how companies with huge market share numbers work. Dell gets special prices from everyone. It's a great move for Samsung. They can use this volume to displace other embedded hard drive products. High volume really makes for cheaper chips.
