I just saw this clip yesterday. Wow. I remember wanting one of these when TNG first came out...looks like those types of controls aren't unreasonably far off. Here's hoping such devices entirely replace the current mouse and monitor within 10 years or less...

That *is* seriously drool worthy. They made some killer apps for it as well. Those demos were amazing!

Some of the other projects on his site (http://mrl.nyu.edu/~jhan/) are pretty amazing too, like the mosaic images of the person in front of the display consisting of 200 live cable TV shows... he must have some serious CPU power stashed away there Wink

I read recently about the often overlooked ability of a LED to act as both a light emitter and detector in the same circuit. I wonder if the new OLED displays can utilise this to make ultra cheep, flat, low power multi touch monitors.
Mind you, I get quite angry when someone touches my LCD or plasma screen Rolling Eyes .

hm, i know ftir to stand for 'fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy' (can be frustrating to perform, though Wink)

i found this on 'Frustrated Total Internal Reflection ': If an evanescent wave (such as that produced by total internal reflection) extends across a separating medium into a region occupied by a higher index of refraction material, energy may flow across the boundary. This phenomenon is known as frustrated total internal reflection, and is similar to quantum mechanical tunneling or barrier penetration. When transmission across the boundary occurs in this manner, the "total internal reflection" is no longer total since the transmitted wave comes at the expense of the internally reflected one.

look at http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/physics/FrustratedTotalInternalReflection.html for more infos

best regards

eike

The world is weird, but in a very interesting way. See
http://www.wooster.edu/physics/JrIS/Files/Becky.pdf

Quote:
J. C. Bose was examining the wave nature
of the radiation of microwaves in 1897. His
experiment consisted of a beam of microwaves
directed at a right angle asphalt prism. The
microwaves were totally internally reflected by
the hypotenuse of the prism. However, when a
second right angle prism was placed in contact
with the first, hypotenuse to hypotenuse, the beam
of microwaves passed through. The distance
between the two prisms was increased, but kept
significantly smaller than the wavelength of the
microwave. A portion of the beam was
transmitted through the prisms and across the gap
between them. This confirmed the wave nature of
microwaves.1

Might be very unsurprising to seasoned physicists, but I find this to be highly intriguing.

This Lemur device provides a lot of this and is available now.
